What is a Curtain Pelmet?

A curtain pelmet often referred to as a cornice is a type of box crafted usually out of plywood that is designed to cover up curtain poles and fixings and bring style and drama to any room.

The pelmets are usually painted or covered with a patterned or plain fabric in keeping with the style of your curtains or room decor.

There is no rules with pelmets you can have a standard traditional box style that can be paired with curtains and decor to give a very grand traditional feel, or you can go for a more contemporary shape to give you room a chic, dynamic and modern look.

What is a Curtain Valance?

Many people use a valance the same way as a pelmet, to hide curtain poles or curtain fixtures and fittings.

A valance is a piece of fabric, usually made from the same materials as your curtains. Valances usually add more softness to your room unlike a pelmet that can add a lot of drama.

Valances are attached easily to the pole or rod that holds your curtains.  There are usually two styles of valance:

  • The Simple Valance – These can be used alone or layered over other window treatments. The soft gathers and folds are perfect with any casual decorating style.
  • The Pleated Valance – A box-pleated valance is a classic design that is perfect for traditional styles or old-world looks such as Tuscan or British Colonial.
