The Pretoria Art Museum
The Pretoria Art Museum is located in Arcadia Park, Pretoria in South Africa and occupies an entire city block. The collection of art began in the 1930’s but it was in 1932 it grew in size when Lady Michaelis gave a large number of artworks to the city council after the death of her husband, Sir Max Michaelis. The collection mainly consisted of 17th century work and was then housed in the town hall.
In 1954 The Pretoria City Council decided that a building was needed to house the art collection as it had grown in size over the years, aside from its original collections of South African art by Henk Pierneef, Pieter Wenning, Frans Oerder, Anton van Wouw and Irma Stern, the collection now also included international work from Europe and the USA.
Building began in 1962 and the museum finally opened its doors in 1964. If you ever have the chance to visit this gallery you will see some unique pieces and some wonderful examples of frames that display the artwork.
